Junior Girls

Golf is unlike any sport I have ever played. It is technical and there are no shortcuts. Tuition and practice are key to achieving some proficiency. Our girls are getting that message and understand the hard work involved in achieving success.

Golf is increasingly becoming a popular game with junior girls and we are seeing this more and more at BOSGC. This is great to see.

It is wonderful to have momentum from a successful player who is enjoying the game, who can demonstrate what can be achieved. Ellie Mans is a perfect example of this and is going from strength to strength. She has progressed to a very high standard indeed playing competitions at County and National level and winning them! Well done Ellie.

Now Connie, Beth and Eloise have also tasted success as winners of competitions and their golf is also massively improving. Sophie has just played her first competitions this year and with her obvious talent there is no reason why she cannot join them on the podium.

The key thing to remember is that golf is open to all Juniors and we are keen to assist anyone who is interested in playing this great and (let's face it!) challenging game.

Golf Isn't Just For Boys!

If you thought golf was just for boys, think again!  Here are four good reasons why you would be wrong.

Girls enjoy golf just as much as boys and Barton-on-Sea Golf Club is always keen to welcome new girl members into the Junior Section and show the lads how it is done.  Our girl members are completely integrated and compete equally with the boys in the many Junior Competitions, with notable success.

There is a full schedule of competitions and matches throughout the year which culminates in our annual Junior Presentation Night when the girls' successes prove that they are very capable of being a match for the boys.

2018-19

Barton-on-Sea Junior Section member, 13 year old Ellen (Ellie) Mans, is on a one girl crusade to prove that girls can enjoy the game and be just as successful at golf as boys.

Ellie first tried golf at the age of 6 with her brother Jack and joined Barton in 2015 as a Junior Member at the age of 9. She rapidly made a name for herself in the Junior Section winning the Lady Captain’s award for the Most Improved Player in her first year of membership. That early promise has proved to be no flash in the pan, and under the tutelage of Head Professional Peter Rodgers, Ellie has continued to improve and develop her game, achieving many notable successes both inside and outside of the club.

Her early promise was quickly recognised by the County, and Ellen first played for the Hampshire Girls Team in 2015 at 10 years of age.

2016 saw Ellen twice listed on the Daily Telegraph BMW Junior Leaderboard, following her wins at the Ferndown Junior Open and Brokenhurst Manor Junior Open. She was also the Handicap Champion at the Hampshire Girls Southern Regional Championships at the Army Golf Club, which was her first 36 hole win, plus the IAPS U11 Girls National Champion.

Continuing to impress, at the tender age of 11 she was included in the 2017 Hampshire Girls U18 Performance Group where she was the youngest of the three “rookies” in the squad.

Ellen, now 13, is a single handicap golfer and is the current HLCGA Junior County Handicap Champion. It might have been the final day of the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie but Barton-on-Sea's links course invited the creme de la creme of Hampshire Girl Golfers for their annual championship. A slight breeze in the morning challenged some of the girls and with a lot of run on the ball it was easy to find the occasional bunker or long rough.  At the half way point Ellen recorded a strong nett 70, and lay in 2nd place, by just 1 shot. However with another 18 to go anything could happen. As anticipated, the breeze did pick up in the afternoon making conditions quite different and arguably trickier.  Ellen clawed back the 1 shot deficit to lift the trophy with a nett 75 & a combined 145. A Home Win!

She is the current holder of the Blackmoor Huntsman Trophy (41 Stableford Pts) and winner of Best Girl Golfer with a nett 68 in the Junior Open.  She won the Dorset Girls Crane Valley Peter Alliss Trophy, 3rd for Hampshire U18 Girls at Cams Hall & winner of the Autumn Trophy at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club.  She was crowned Champion of Champions at Sturminster Marshall in 2019 with her Handicap cut to 7.

2019 sees Ellen compete in her first England Golf Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship over 54 holes at Hawkstone Park GC, Shropshire.
